Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder is associated with differences in social communication, interaction, learning pedagogies, and behavioural needs and challenges. Some people with Autism can’t communicate their needs or feelings and struggle with sensory challenges. Behavioral difficulties endanger their own safety, well-being and independent living. However, autism is a spectrum with a wide range of strengths and abilities as well. Some possess or develop effective verbal communication skills, have a normal or above-average IQ, live independently and build healthy relationships when minimally supported by the society.

One of the most important things we can do as a parent or caregiver is to learn the early signs of autism and become familiar with the typical developmental milestones that children reach.

The following may indicate your child is at risk for an autism spectrum disorder. If you notice any of the following, ask your doctor for an evaluation right away:

By 6 months - Few or no big smiles or other warm, joyful and engaging expressions and Limited or no eye contact

By 9 months - Little or no back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions

By 16 months - Very few or no words

By 24 months - Very few or no meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating)
